Inventions through out WW1.
As the war began in 1914, countries started to think of how they could make better weapons or come up with better ways to defeat their enemy. Tanks were one of the biggest improvements of the war. Trucks could not go through trenches very well because of the wheels, so people started to think of different ideas and came up with tread so it could go through hard terrain. The first tank was designed in 1915 by a British man and it first saw combat in 1916. Later on the French invented a tank with a turret on the top of it. A very effective form of weaponry that was less expensive than the tank and didn`t take as long to produce was poison gas. The Germans were initially the first to use large scale chemical weapons with an attack on the Russians during the Battle of Bolimov but the gas froze in the bullets due to the freezing temperature. On April 22, 1915 the Germans sprayed chlorine gas toward the French colonial who were stationed in the trenches.
The use of poisonous weapons also led to another great invention: the gas mask. The mask varied between armies, but the concept was the same, charcoal and anti-gas chemicals filtered in the mouth piece. Since fighting became more challenging on the ground, countries began to think of ways to be "above the competition". The first airplane were primarily made of wire, wood and canvas. The downside of this was that these were easily brought down by artillery from the ground, but in 1916 Germany armed planes with machine guns that wouldn't shoot off their propellers. Dogfights now a reoccurring event and many airmen on the front line did not usually live long. Eventually planes became sturdier and more effective and new air inventions like the observation balloon and Zeppelins were big innovations.
