What caused the war?
There are many factors that went into the start of WW1. Countries having mutual defense alliances was a major cause of most of the world being involved. Countries throughout Europe made agreements that pulled them into battled because these treaties meant that if one country was attacked then the allies were bound to defend them. Imperialism helped push the world in WW1 because it increased competition between growing empires. It led to confrontation among countries because everybody wanted to increase their power and wealth by bringing additional territories under their control.
There are also two other types of "isms" that helped push for the war to start like militarism and nationalism. When the world entered the 20th century, the arms race began, Germany had the greatest increase in build up military wise. Great Britain along with Germany greatly increased their navies and Russia`s military establishment had a greater influence on public policy. Nationalism really started to take place when Slavic people in Bosnia wanted to be a part of Serbia not Austria-Hungary. Each country tried to prove their power and dominance over another. The spark that really launched the conflict was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. The people responsible were a Serbian- nationalist terrorist group called the Black Hand.
